Chapter 2
The Rogue Sylvan
As I strolled along the open pathway I stumbled upon an opening in the forest. I looked up to find a small Mikorange, stacking bananas under a huge Hermitree. It saw me and made a small chirping sound, as it smiled. All of the sudden, five more vibrant orange faces popped up, and they started chirping as well. Each one in a different note. Alone they might sound like a simple sound, but when played together it was a beautiful tune. It reminded me of the time the melodious fairies came to town. They had such a divine way of bringing life to sound as they sang songs of their home, "The Sanctuary in the Sky.” It sounded like a peaceful place, and it was a floating city! Wow! I hoped I could see it one day. When all of the chirping had stopped, a mist slowly appeared over the pool of water at the edge of the clearing. The once luscious green floor of the surrounding area had started blooming thousands of beautiful red roses. The mist turned a shade of pink. With a closer look, I realized that it wasn’t really a mist. It was a billion rose pedals floating in the air. Suddenly, I could see something. No. Someone, in the mist. It was a girl, with the most extravagant looking dress, made of a bold burgundy and a soft pink. Her hair was golden, like a ray of light made from the sun. I had never seen anything like it before. As I stood there awestruck by her presence, the Hermitree spoke out to me,
“That’s the maiden of the flower kind. They call her ‘Rose Lover’. She appears with grace and wisdom.”
She spoke in a soft dainty voice, almost interrupting the Hermitree, “The flowers tell me you’re going to the citadel on Mount Sylvania. Is this true?”
“Yes, I need to see the great Orea.” I replied.
She turned her head towards the mountain and smiled, and then she said, “The great Orea can see all of the forest from the mountain. She knows that you are coming, and anticipates your arrival. Oh and Levi, do be careful when passing through the Birchwood Way.”
As I wondered how she knew my name, she turned around, and walked into the mist, and the whole area returned to the way it was.
“It’s time for you to be on your way.” Said a gullible and cheery voice. It was the Hermitree again. As I started walking out of the clearing, the Mikorange began stacking bananas once more.
Walking away, I couldn’t help but think about the old joke, “Orange you glad I didn’t say banana? Ha!” I chuckled to myself. But enough of that. This is serious, and serious times call for a serious mindset.
“The Birchwood Way” read the sign. It looked very gloomy, and had a haunting aura surrounding it. I walked down the path a little bit to find skulls scattered around some of the trees. The skulls were all sizes, and as I looked around, I heard a sound, which seemed like it said “Hootywho!” I shot my eyes straight to the branch I thought the sound came from. The being jumped into a bush, off of the tree limb, like a frog. The bush started to shake, and a Snapdrassinagon appeared, and another, and another! There were four of them all together. They moved swiftly in such an untraceable, yet smooth way. They put their blades to my neck. Just when I thought my time was up, I heard a sharp grass whistle. The Snapdrassinagon pulled away and stood in formation, to make way for their leader. The one the Sylvans call “Bladefender.” The story goes that several with the blade have slain him, but when they think he is on his way to the graveyard, he arises and strikes with a hidden fury defeating his foes. So in reality he has never been taken advantage of, by anyone. He pulled the grass whistle from his lips slowly and said,
“Me and the boys don’t care too much for village folk. Where are you off to?”
“I have to get to the citadel on Mount Sylvania to see Orea the great.” I boldly replied.
“Well, I think that the boys have been a little restless. I keep telling them they need to enjoy life a little more. So, were gonna play a game. The boys are gonna count to ten, and you my friend are gonna run.”
As I panicked, I started to run. All I could hear was an evil laugh and, “One… Two… Three…” Slowly fading the further I ran. “Four… Five… Six… Seven…” With each number I ran faster and faster. The fear I had was immeasurable. “Eight… Nine… Ten!!!” The sharp grass whistle was back, and it was longer this time. They closed in on me so quickly, but I was almost out of the Birchwood Way. I could feel them practically on my neck. “Bam!” I tripped on a moss stone, and fell right into a pit.
